Mental health/mental illness

We seek to create supportive communities and bring system-level change in priority areas and
selected cities through a strategic and coordinated approach that combines many nuanced aspects of
life.
LGBTIQA+, Youth and adolescents are at crucial period for developing social and emotional habits
important for mental well-being. These include adopting healthy sleep patterns; exercising regularly;
developing coping, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills; and learning to manage emotions.
Protective and supportive environments in the family, at school and in the wider community are
important.
Risk-taking behaviours; Suicide and self-harm; Psychosis; Eating disorders; Behavioural
disorders; Emotional disorders are the most common expressions of ill health
It is crucial to address the needs of LGBTIQA+, Youth and adolescents with mental health conditions.
We avoid institutionalization and over-medicalization, prioritizing non-pharmacological approaches,
and respecting the rights of children in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
Child and other human rights instruments are key for adolescents’ mental health.
We use self-help psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization, Self-Help
Plus, to prevent the onset of mental disorders among LGBTIQ+. Self-Help Plus (SH+) is based on
acceptance and commitment therapy, a form of cognitive behavioural therapy. It consists of a pre-
recorded audio course, delivered by non-specialist trained facilitators in a group setting and
complemented with an illustrated self-help book adapted for the target cultural group.
C4PD has developed a mental health training package for educators for improved understanding of
the importance of mental health in the school setting and to guide the implementation of strategies to
promote, protect and restore mental health among their students. It includes training manuals and
materials to help scale up the number of schools promoting mental health.
